Ceasar Undecided Whether Rome Should Burn

Health and Human Service Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in August proposed a regulation that would require all health care plans to cover sterilizations and all FDA-approved contraceptives, including abortifacients. Forcing people to purchase services they do not want, that's one thing, but to force them to do things they find morally repugnant, now that would be something again.

It is over this proposed expansion of governmental authority that we find the president pondering:
President Barack Obama has not yet decided whether to go forward with a proposed regulation under the health care law he signed last year that would force Catholic individuals and institutions to act against the teachings of the Catholic church.
NARAL Pro Choice America issued a statement urging Obama to “stand firm against anti-birth control organizations.”
O, let their bodies follow, my dear liege,
With blood and sword and fire to win your right!
In aid whereof we of the spiritualty
Will raise your Highness such a mighty sum
As never did the clergy at one time
Bring in to any of your ancestors.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops responded:
"Such nationwide government coercion of religious people and groups to sell, broker, or purchase 'services' to which they have a moral or religious objection represents an unprecedented attack on religious liberty."
White House Press Secretary Jay "Chili-con" Carney said the president seeks to strike a balance on the matter.
"You can be sure that we want to strike the right balance between expanding coverage of preventive services and respecting religious beliefs. And that’s the balance that will be sought as this decision is made."
Put in another way: 'We are weighing the politics of it and are considering if we can get away with another infringement on individual liberty and religious freedom. If we can take this away from people, we will for all intents and purposes have succeeded in bringing down the greatest free people the world had ever seen.'

  1. I just cannot believe an American president could be considering infringing about the rights of the citizens in such a frivolous manner, and that so few are troubled by it. NARAL is not a big proponent of freedom, I see. As awful as that is, and it is despicable, it would seem the entire nation holds its freedom cheap, and that is what I find so troubling. That the president could even consider such an action and not be universally impugned says that we as a people have lost sight of what makes America great. It's not diversity, Barry.

    It is our freedom.

  3. The Left believes in choice--
do it their way or die.
Don't even question it. Their intentions are always pure. Yours are tainted with racism, sexism, greed, and evil. Move along.

  4. For a while now, I've held a theory that in Obama the political-left have gotten all the things that for eight years they had projected upon Bush.

If only it just affected them and not all of us ...

  5. "As awful as that is, and it is despicable, it would seem the entire nation holds its freedom cheap, ..."

Most do, which is why the nation is in the mess it's in.

  6. "Ceasar Undecided Whether Rome Should Burn ..."

Oh, now! That's only until he has the perfect scape-goat picked out. "The Christians did it" was used last time; I think this time it's toss-up between "the Christians did it" and "Bush did it", depending on which of the two isn't "too soon".

  7. The fabric of our society is being torn apart, but he is likely to claim he had nothing to do with it.

    "We offered the world ORDER!"
